The first day of school may mean its a child’s first day of kindergar ten or one’s “first, last day” because they are a senior. There are parents who are excited to send their children off to school, and others who are sad their children are returning to the classroom. Bertie County Schools, Bethel Assembly Christian Academy and Lawrence Academy all started in-per- son instruction over the last few weeks. All of the schools are hoping that they can continue face-to-face and not have to go back to virtu al learning due to COVlD-19. Bethel Assembly Christian Academy (BACA) started school earlier this month (Aug. 11.) They have grown with quite a few new enroll ments this year. Especially over the past few weeks with new enrollments still arriving. BACA has a total of 192 students enrolled for the 2021-2022 school year. BACA Principal Sharon See SCHOOL, 3 Reduce the stigma BRANDICE HOGGARD Staff Writer WINDSOR - Internation al Overdose Awareness day is set for Aug. 31. International Over dose Awareness Day is a global event that is held on Aug. 31 each year. It aims to raise awareness of overdose and reduce the stigma of drug-related deaths. This day also ac knowledges the grief felt by families and friends that are remembering those who have died or had a permanent injury due to a drug overdose. International Over dose Awareness Day spreads the message that the tragedy of over dose death is prevent able. Some may ask, ‘What is an overdose?’ An overdose means a person has taken a quantity of a drug or combination of drugs that his or her body is unable to cope with. Relay rolls on BRANDICE HOGGARD Staff Writer WINDSOR - In another year full of uncertainty due to COVlD-19, lack of team fund raisers and more the Bertie County Chapter of American Cancer Society would not be denied their event. The organization contin ued to raise awareness, along with funds, for cancer re search and have nearly met their yearly goal. The Bertie County Chapter of ACS raised $ 180,528.19 dur ing the 2021-2022 year, falling a little less than $10,000 short of their $190,000 goal. Little Miss and Mr. Relay were recognized Saturday night at Relay for Life. Little Miss Relay is Sabriah Hatha way, raising $261.00. She is the daughter of Calvin and Shannon Hathaway. Little Mr. Relay was Gavin Hoggard, raising $500. He is the son of Nicholas and Brandice Hog gard. They both received a trophy, were crowned Little Miss and Mr Relay for Life, and received a bag of good- See RELAY, 3 Loads of love LESLIE BEACHBOARD Managing Editor WINDSOR - The Albe marle Alliance for Chil dren, a partner agency of the Albemarle Area United Way, partnered with the Wash House and several local res taurants to host a Loads of Love in Bertie County event. Approximately 177 participants/families came by the Wash House on Granville Street in Windsor to have the opportunity to use wash their laundry for free. Books were provided to 175 children, and 19 children signed up to receive books from the Dolly Barton Imagina tion Library. Free vision screens were provided to 50 children, and 11 were referred to Edwards Eye Care in Ahoskie for complete eye exams. 19 adults received eye ex ams also. COVID-19 cases are still on the rise in Bertie County LESLIE BEACHBDARD Managing Editor WINDSDR - The numbers are increasing, and not in a good way. Albemarle Regional Health Services (ARHS) issued its In this edition — current regional COVlD-19 update on Friday, Aug. 20. The updates are released on Friday each week, showing the updated information on vaccines, active cases and facility outbreaks. The re port includes Bertie County. According to the report, there have been 1,929 lab confirmed cases of COVlD-19 for the county, with 1,823 of those cases considered re covered. There were 59 ac tive COVlD-19 cases report ed. Sadly, there have been 47 deaths. As of press time, the North Carolina Department of Health and Human Services (NCDHHS) COVlD-19 Dash board for Tuesday, Aug. 24 shows the current overall case count for the county at 1,965 cases. That is an in crease of 36 cases since the Aug. 20 report.
